Green Coalition will Hatch Action Plans for People to Help EnvironmentQuincy Herald WhigToday's Date -- June 24, 2008 By STEVE EIGHINGERHerald-Whig Staff Writer The emphasis will be on environmentally responsible actions at a Wednesday meeting coordinated by the Adams County Green Coalition. "We feel that bringing the community together on a very important issue, and by using everyone's ideas and plans, we may be able to come up with some action plans or groups to concentrate on different areas of need to go green," said Jennifer Arnold, a spokesman for the coalition. The 5:30 p.m. meeting will be at the Stoney Creek Inn and will be hosted by the Adams County League of Women Voters, the University of Illinois Extension Adams/Brown Unit, and the Quincy Planning and Development Department. Some of the other people involved in the coalition are Carrie Edgar of the Adams/Brown Unit, City Planner Chuck Bevelheimer, Iris Nelson of the League of Women Voters and Mariann Barnard. Arnold said a coalition of this nature is designed to promote and encourage environmentally responsible actions and strategies throughout Adams County. "It will further education and support residents in taking action to practice more environmentally sustainable lifestyles," Arnold said. "It will work with individuals, companies, schools, nonprofit organizations, religious groups and government agencies to conserve natural resources." Arnold said some of the current green projects under way in Adams County include the city and Quincy Recycle beginning to collect glass for recycling, Baldwin School beginning its own green space, Quincy Park District installing recycling bins in busy park areas, Friends of the Trail encouraging people to walk and ride bikes, and residents growing their own food in the Quincy Community Garden on North Eighth Street. -- seighinger@whig.com/221-3377 For More Information Contact: |
